"Humbler-A Tribute to Danny Gatton", by Rusty Russell

Guitar Player, May 1998, pg.52

John Jennings:(pg. 62): "Danny would obviously make anyone's short list of great guitarists. He's still very important to the players in this [Washington, DC] area. There's never been a huge scene here, but Danny was kind of the quarterback for all the players. We learn mostly by listening to others, by pulling what they do apart, looking at it, and putting it back together. But you couldn't do that with him. He was so facile and broad. He was also uncompromising. I'm sure he knew what it would take to reach a huge mass market, but he would never have done it.  The most lasting lesson I got from hearing him was that I was not cut out to be a guitar hero."
