(Vanguard) This second album from
the singer-songwriter-gui-
tarist-producer best known for co-shaping Mary Chapin Carpenter's sound is a beautiful
downer about the futility of love and relationships. The jazzy blues meditation of
"My First Career," which compares life to a circus, delivers more thrills than
the big top itself. But the best cut is the title song, with Carpenter, about a
couple locked in a cycle of physical abuse. Not recommended for manic-depressives. B
